How to Measure Your Dog for a Coat or Rain Jacket

A dog coat can be the right length and still fit poorly around the chest or neck. Before choosing a coat, rain jacket, or sweater, take your dog’s measurements and compare them with the chart on that specific product page. Size labels vary by brand and style.

Take three measurements

  1. Back length: With your dog standing, measure along the top of the back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
  2. Chest girth: Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the chest, usually just behind the front legs.
  3. Neck girth: Measure around the base of the neck where a collar normally rests.

The American Kennel Club’s measuring guide describes these as the core measurements used for many dog clothes and gear. Keep the tape snug without pulling it tight, and write down the measurements in the units shown on the product chart.

Use the chart for the exact item

Check the product page’s own chart before ordering. A raincoat, sweater, and vest can use different measurements, and one brand’s size label may not match another brand’s. If a chart lists chest girth as the primary measurement, follow that instruction. If your dog’s measurements fall across more than one size, use the brand’s guidance or contact the seller before ordering.

Check the fit after it arrives

When trying on a new garment, check that it sits in the position shown by the manufacturer, closes without pulling, and allows your dog to move comfortably. Follow the product’s care and use instructions. If the item rubs, restricts movement, or does not match the chart, stop using it and check the seller’s return policy.
