What Temperature Does a Ball Python Need?

Ball pythons need a temperature gradient so they can move between warmer and cooler areas. Veterinary guidance commonly uses a warm basking area around 90°F (32°C) and a cool end around 75°F (24°C).

Does the whole enclosure need to be 90°F?

No. Heating the entire enclosure to the basking temperature removes the cooler area the snake needs for thermoregulation.

Do I need a thermostat?

Yes. Heat sources should be controlled with a suitable thermostat, while a separate digital thermometer verifies the actual temperatures in the enclosure.

What about nighttime temperature?

A nighttime drop is normal, but the enclosure should not become excessively cold. If supplemental night heat is needed, use an appropriate lightless heat source controlled by a thermostat.

If using a ceramic heat emitter, see our ceramic heat emitter fixture guide, or browse Snake Supplies.
