Green iguanas grow into large, active, tree-dwelling reptiles. A proper setup needs much more than a small starter tank: plan for a large, tall enclosure with strong climbing structures, heat, UVB, appropriate humidity, food and fresh water.
How much space does an iguana need?
Adult green iguanas need very large enclosures with substantial vertical space. Their housing must allow climbing, turning, stretching and moving between warmer and cooler areas. Many adults ultimately need custom-sized housing rather than a typical glass aquarium.
What should be inside the enclosure?
Provide sturdy branches or shelves for climbing and basking, safe hiding/resting areas, food and water dishes, appropriate flooring or substrate, and equipment for monitoring temperature and humidity.
Does an iguana need heat and UVB?
Yes. Green iguanas need a daytime basking area plus appropriate UVB exposure. Heat and UVB perform different jobs, so both must be planned into the enclosure.
