What Do I Need for a Bearded Dragon Setup?

A bearded dragon setup is more than a tank and a food bowl. Before bringing a dragon home, plan the enclosure, heat, UVB lighting, temperature monitoring, substrate, hides, feeding equipment and safe enrichment.

Start with the enclosure

Choose an enclosure appropriate for the animal's current and adult size. Bearded dragons need enough room to establish a warm basking area and a cooler area rather than having one temperature throughout the enclosure.

Heat and UVB lighting

Proper heat and UVB are core husbandry requirements. Use reptile-specific equipment and measure conditions with appropriate thermometers rather than guessing by how warm the enclosure feels.

What belongs inside?

  • Appropriate substrate or enclosure flooring
  • Secure hides
  • Basking surfaces
  • Food and water dishes as appropriate
  • Safe climbing and enrichment items
  • Reliable temperature monitoring

Food and supplements

Bearded dragon diets change with age and include appropriately selected animal and plant foods. Calcium and other supplementation should follow current reptile-care guidance and product directions.

Build the habitat before bringing the dragon home

Set up and test temperatures and lighting first. That gives you time to correct the environment before an animal depends on it.
