Both T5 linear lamps and compact bulbs can produce UVB, but they distribute that UV differently. The important question is not simply which bulb is “stronger”—it is whether the setup creates an appropriate UV zone for your reptile.
Why do people use T5 UVB lamps?
A linear T5 lamp can illuminate a broader portion of an enclosure, which can help create a wider usable UV basking zone when the fixture and lamp are correctly matched to the species.
When can a compact UVB bulb make sense?
Compact lamps concentrate UV over a smaller area. They may be useful in appropriately sized setups or for animals requiring lower UV exposure, provided the lamp's output and placement match the animal's needs.
Does a reflector matter?
Yes. Reflectors direct more of the lamp's output toward the enclosure. Fixture design, mesh and distance can all substantially change the UV level that reaches the reptile.
Should I choose by UVB percentage alone?
No. Percentage is only one part of the system. Species requirements, lamp technology, reflector, enclosure height and basking distance all matter.
