The right UVB light depends on the species, enclosure height, basking distance, fixture, reflector and any mesh between the lamp and the animal. A bulb marked “UVB” is not automatically right for every reptile.
Do all reptiles need the same amount of UVB?
No. Reptiles that naturally bask in strong open sunlight generally need higher UV exposure than species that spend much of their time under forest cover, in crevices, or active around dawn and dusk.
What are Ferguson Zones?
Ferguson Zones group reptiles by the UV exposure they typically use in nature. Zone-based lamps can make shopping easier, but you still need to match the lamp to your species and the actual distance from the lamp to the basking area.
Does screen or mesh affect UVB?
Yes. Mesh can reduce the amount of UV reaching the animal. Lamp output also changes with distance, so do not copy a mounting distance from another enclosure without checking the lamp manufacturer's guidance.
When should I replace a UVB bulb?
UV output declines over time even while the lamp still produces visible light. Follow the manufacturer's replacement schedule unless you are measuring UV output with appropriate equipment.
