Flipper Edge MAX vs Standard

Flipper Edge MAX vs Standard: Which Aquarium Cleaner Do You Need?

The Flipper Edge Standard and Edge MAX look similar, but they are not simply two price levels of the same aquarium cleaner. The biggest difference is the aquarium wall thickness each model is designed to handle.

If you are deciding between the two, measure or verify your aquarium's glass or acrylic thickness before buying. That specification matters more than tank gallon capacity alone.

Quick Answer

Choose the Flipper Edge Standard for glass or acrylic aquariums up to 1/2 inch (12 mm) thick. Choose the Flipper Edge MAX for thicker panels up to 1 inch (25 mm).

Pristine Pet Supply currently carries both the Flipper Edge Standard and Flipper Edge MAX, along with limited-edition Edge models.

Flipper Edge Standard vs Edge MAX

Feature Edge Standard Edge MAX

Cleaning concept Magnetic scrubber + scraper system Magnetic scrubber + scraper system for substantially thicker panels
Pristine price $69.99 $129.99
Best reason to choose it Your aquarium panel is within the Standard thickness range Your aquarium has thick glass/acrylic that requires the stronger MAX class

Why Does the Edge MAX Cost More?

The MAX is built for aquarium walls up to twice the stated maximum thickness of the Standard model. Maintaining useful magnetic force through a thick aquarium panel requires a different magnet class than cleaning through thinner glass.

That is the reason to pay for MAX. It is not that every aquarium cleans better with the most expensive Flipper. If your tank is comfortably within the Standard's supported thickness, the Standard may already be the appropriate tool.

Don't Choose by Gallons Alone

A common mistake is shopping for a magnetic aquarium cleaner only by tank volume: 40 gallon, 75 gallon, 125 gallon and so on. Gallon capacity can give you a rough idea of aquarium size, but two tanks with similar capacity can use different panel thicknesses.

For a magnetic cleaner, panel thickness is the specification to confirm. Check the aquarium manufacturer's specifications or measure the panel correctly before choosing between Standard and MAX.

When Should You Buy the Edge Standard?

The Flipper Edge Standard is the logical choice when your glass or acrylic is no thicker than 1/2 inch (12 mm) and you want the Edge scrubber-and-scraper design without paying for magnet strength intended for much thicker aquarium walls.

Pristine also carries the Edge Limited Edition Clownfish Standard. It stays in the Standard thickness class while offering the limited-edition design.

When Do You Actually Need the Edge MAX?

Move up to the Flipper Edge MAX when the aquarium uses thicker panels beyond the Standard's supported range, up to the MAX rating of 1 inch (25 mm).

This is where the $129.99 model makes sense: large aquariums with genuinely thick glass or acrylic, not simply because MAX is the higher-priced version.

What About the $149.99 Limited Edition MAX?

Pristine carries the Clownfish MAX Limited Edition and Puffer MAX Limited Edition.

These are still MAX-class cleaners designed for panels up to 1 inch (25 mm). The higher price does not mean they handle thicker aquarium walls than the regular $129.99 Edge MAX. Choose a limited edition because you want that version, not because your aquarium requires more cleaning strength than the standard MAX specification.

Can Flipper Edge Be Used on Acrylic?

Both Edge classes are designed for glass and acrylic aquariums when used with the correct cleaning components. Acrylic requires more care because it scratches more easily than glass. Always use the appropriate acrylic-safe blade or cleaning surface, and make sure sand or substrate is not trapped between the cleaner and the aquarium wall.

What If My Aquarium Is Much Smaller?

You may not need an Edge at all. Flipper also makes smaller magnetic cleaners including the Pico, Nano Float and Float Standard. Paying for an Edge MAX on a small thin-walled aquarium gives you capability you do not need.

Bottom Line: Standard or MAX?

Up to 1/2 inch (12 mm): start with Edge Standard.

More than 1/2 inch and up to 1 inch (25 mm): Edge MAX is the appropriate class.

Do not spend the extra money based only on aquarium gallons or because MAX sounds better. Verify the wall thickness, choose the cleaner designed for that thickness, and then decide whether you want the regular or limited-edition version.
