Corn snakes can survive without UVB when other husbandry is appropriate, but modern reptile husbandry increasingly recognizes that snakes can benefit from access to suitable low-level UVB and a normal day-night light cycle.
Is UVB the same as heat?
No. UVB lighting and enclosure heating serve different purposes. A UVB lamp should not be relied on as the only way to establish the required temperature gradient unless the specific equipment is designed to provide both.
How strong should the UVB be?
Corn snakes do not need the high UVB exposure used for sun-basking desert lizards. If providing UVB, choose an appropriate low-output system and follow the lamp manufacturer's placement guidance for your enclosure and screen configuration.
Should lights stay on at night?
No. Provide a normal period of darkness. If nighttime heat is required, use a suitable lightless heat source.
